The Airedale Terrier is an elegant but sturdy dog, well-balanced and square with the height at the withers being the same as the length from shoulder point to buttock - appearing neither short in the front legs nor high in the rear.  None of the dog's features is exaggerated - the general impression is one of moderation and balance.  The expression is eager and intelligent, and the Airedale appears self-confident, unafraid of people or other dogs.  Airedales are more reserved in temperament than many of the other breeds, but should not act in a shy manner when approached by strangers.  Males, approximately 23 inches; Females, slightly less.
