what can i catch from a pet?

When you handle a pet that you do not know, ask yourself?

-Does this pet have ringworm that can cause a skin problem for me?
-Does this pet have scabies that can make my skin very itchy?
-Does this pet have fleas which are carrying tapeworms?
(If accidentally swallowed, tapeworms can cause stomach aches, diarrhea, etc.)
-Is this pet carrying rabies, which can cause death?
-Could this pet bite me and cause me to get infections and/or stitches?

BE CAUTIOUS!  NEVER ASSUME THAT ANY DOG OR CAT IS SAFE!

Beware of the Soil!

Going barefoot in the yard, rolling in the grass and gardening are all activities that we enjoy.  However, it is not without risk.  From the ground, we can get the following zoonotic problems:

-Visceral Larval Migrans
Tiny roundworm larva, passed as eggs from dogs and cats, migrate through the
skin.  They go to the inside organs, especially the eye, where they develop into a
large worm.  Ten thousand children alone are affected annually, 750 of whom
lose their vision as a result.

-Cutaneous Larval Migrans
Tiny hookworm larva, passed as eggs from dogs, migrate in the skin.  This causes
itchy skin, leading to the common term of "ground itch".

-Toxoplasmosis
