Our Mission: To educate ourselves and others in the ways that people interact with animals and nature, and to provide them with nothing less than the best pet products in the world. |
Sojourner Farms... the European-Style dog food mix with wholesome grains, herbs, nuts and sea vegetables. This dog food mix has nothing artificial, no fillers, no preservatives, is made with all human-quality ingredients and is ready to mix with meat and veggies.
Our story began years ago when we traveled to Greece to study European pet feeding methods. Their basic belief, we found, was that dogs by nature are healthiest on raw grains, meats, nuts, and vegetables. That's why we formulated Sojourner Farms European-Style Dog Food Mix to be as close as possible to the raw foods nature provides for dogs in the wild. Our bags contain only human-grade ingredients. There are no preservatives, no artificial flavors or colors - only wholesome, unprocessed ingredients like steamed, rolled oats, ground pecans and carob powder. There are no fillers, so you feed a lot less than other commercial brands - and that makes our food a real value! Just mix Sojourner Farms with raw meat and you've got a complete and properly balanced meal. And it tastes great! You can also add raw or steamed vegetables and other healthy foods to Sojourner Farms. It's a great way to provide your dog with a natural, homemade meal in just minutes a day. In short, we've done everything we can to make Sojourner Farms the best thing you can do for your dog!

FAQ's and Helpful Tips |
What
are the benefits of feeding Sojos?
Sojos is
made of all-natural, whole food nutrient sources, with no by-products and
nothing artificial. The benefits people have reported over the years from
switching to a diet like this have varied from healthy skin, to more defined
muscles, an improved demeanor, fuller coats and glistening teeth...all kinds of
great results. We've also heard from people with overweight pets who have
shed needless pounds. Many have even reported an improvement in chronic
illnesses like diabetes, digestive problems, urinary issues and even
cancer. That's why almost all of our new customers come from
referrals. Pets absolutely thrive on this diet. Are the results
always immediate? No, not always. Sometimes it takes a couple of
months to notice a difference. In some cases, such as with severe
allergies, things might get a little worse before they get better as the body
detoxifies. But if you stick with it, we think you'll agree that switching
to this diet was the best thing you ever did for your pet.
Can I
really feed raw meat?
Our
customers have been raw meat for over a decade and holistic vets have been
recommending it for over 25 years with fabulous results. Animals in the
wild do not cook their meat and we feel that the resulting enzymes and nutrients
are extremely beneficial. Dogs are naturally able to handle bacteria found
in raw meats that humans cannot. Just look for healthy-looking meat, and
always refrigerate or freeze it as you would for yourself. Though we feel
that bacteria found in raw meat is harmless to dogs, you can sterilize a pound
of meat with a solution of either 4 drops of grapefruit seed extract, or
1 tbsp, of 3% food-grade hydrogen peroxide, added to 6 oz. of water.
Cooking meat all the way through will destroy crucial nutrients and enzymes and
requires supplementation. When making your decision, it's most important
to do what make you feel most comfortable.
Do I
need to supplement this food?
Traditional
pet food is cooked, thus robbing it of naturally occurring nutrients.
Feeding a raw diet makes supplements less necessary - though we still encourage
them to boost nutrition for sick or pregnant animals, puppies or even healthy
dogs. Adding raw vegetables to our mix is a great way to provide natural
supplementation and we strongly encourage it. Please consult a holistic
veterinarian for specific recommendations. To find a holistic vet in you
area, call the American Holistic Veterinary Association at (410)

How
do I mix up this food?
The charts
on the back of the bag are the amounts for once-per-day feeding. If you
want to feed twice-per-day, simply divide the amounts on the back of the bag in
half. For normal adult dogs, the simplest way to figure out the amounts is
to feed 1/2 cup of our food, 1/4 cup of meat, and 3/4 cup of water for every 25
lbs. of your dog's weight. For most cats it's about 1/4 cup of our food
with 1/4 cup of meat and 1/3 cup of water.
What
kind of meat do I mix in?
Beef, turkey
and chicken from the grocery store or butcher are the most predominantly used
meats. If you have a good source of other meats, such as venison or lamb,
fell free to use them as well.
Do
you recommend once-a-day feeding or twice-a-day?
If we had to
pick one, we'd go with once-a-day. What we don't recommend is free
feeding. Imagine yourself having a buffet of food at your home or office
to graze on all day long. Definitely not the healthiest way to eat.
Dogs and cats by nature are better off with specific meal times so that their
digestive systems have an opportunity to rest. If your pet acts hungry,
that's okay. Food is the number one thing in the life of an animal that
drives them and motivated them. A pet without passion for food is a pet
with a dull life. If they are giving you a hard time, you could add a
little extra food, or give them raw veggies for snacks.
Will
my pets gain or lose weight on this diet?
It's very
normal for a pet to drop some fat weight, and then over time begin to develop
muscle when initially switching to fresh food. In general, we feel that a
trim animal is always preferred to an overweight one. In fact, it's okay
if you can see a little of the ribs. If you decide you want to feed more,
make sure you always maintain the proper ratio of our mix to meat, and don't
increase the total fed by more than one weight class on our feeding chart.
To promote weight gain, you can add fattier meat (80% lean or less) or
avocados. Also we've found that adding Alfalfa (which can be found at any
health food store) to the food helps with weight gain.
How
do I know my dog will eat it?
Sojourner
Farms is very palatable and dogs love the taste of fresh raw meat. For
finicky dogs, try starting with just 1/4 tsp. of total mix on top of their old
food until they start taking it in Then gradually increase the mix every
few days over a period of 4-6 weeks. Also try adding soup stock instead of
water.
Not
eating very well? Runny Stool? Gas?
Slow down
the transition process. we can't stress it enough. In most cased,
our food is the first time your animal has eaten anything different than
processed pellets. This is a totally new thing for their bodies. So
please make sure to follow the instructions on the bag, taking at least 2-4
weeks to convert your pet over to Sojos. It also helps to soak the food
overnight. An easy way to do this is to mix up several days worth of the
food, or to rotate a batch in the fridge so that there's always some soaking and
ready to serve. this saves quite a bit of time too.
Is it
difficult to make?
Preparation
can take as little as a couple of minutes a day and the results are well worth
the small time required. To save time, refrigerate a batch of Sojourner
Farms, meat and water and replace with a new batch each time you feed, so you
always have meals ready to serve. Or you can combine up to 5 days worth,
divide into 5 sections, cover and refrigerate for 5 days of ready-made
meals. Or try freezing the mix for a more extended period of time in
portion-sized baggies.
What
about veggies?
We do
encourage you to mix in other healthy foods in addition to meat. If you
are mixing up a salad or chopping vegetables, or preparing other foods such as
potatoes, yogurt, brown rice, beans or eggs, go ahead and throw a little in your
pets dish. Don't believe those who tell you that pets can't eat
"people food". Living being are living beings, and we all need
healthy, real food. Chopped greens, carrots, broccoli and zucchini are
wonderful additions. Stay away from citrus fruits, onions and spicy
foods. For small animals mix in a teaspoon of chopped veggies and up to
1/2 cup or more for larger animals. Veggies and fruits can also be used as
snacks and training treats.
My
dog has allergies. Can I feed this food?
Many of
today's pet "allergies" are the result of enzyme deficiencies cause by
cooked, low-quality grains. Sojourner Farms is human-quality, and because
it's raw, the naturally-occurring enzymes are left intact to aid in
digestion. The result is that pets typically don't experience allergic
reactions to any of our ingredients like they might with other pet foods.
Is
this food too soft to clean my pet's teeth?
Actually
teeth are not cleaned by dry pet foods. That would be like humans eating
potato chips to clean your own teeth. With dogs, teeth are cleaned by a
strong immune system and healthy plaque-fighting saliva.
Is it
expensive?
Our food is
made with no fillers and is very efficient and digestible. This makes it
last a t least twice as long as most dry dog foods and means it's quite
affordable when you consider the cost per feeding.
